The Honolulu International Airport is the world's gateway to the tropical paradise. With just over nine million departures and arrivals per year, HNL, it is obviously the main airport of the islands. It is located on the third Hawaii Island, a few miles from the Oahu central business district. It is also connected to the rest of the islands by way of the Nimitz Highway. While it does substantial tourist travel routes, it also hosts the main cargo routes of Hawaii. This amounts to over twenty million tourists and around four hundred thousand tons of cargo.
Recently in 2006, the airport underwent a budget expansion in order to pay for a modernization renovation and expansion that will amount to about 2.3 billion dollars over twelve years with 1.7 billion going directly to the airport. Currently, the airport has four major runways and is connected to the Hickan Air Force Base. There are also three terminals with much of the travel between mainland United States being processed through the first two terminals. For tourists from Asia and the surrounding areas, such as Japan, the Hawaii International Airport is a critical junction to their travels to North America.
The three main terminals are the Commuter Terminal, Main Terminal, and Inter-Island Terminals. They process flights of their respective nature with Commuter flights sometimes being boarded at the Main terminal to accomodate close scheduling. The routes included by the airport included destinations throughout Asia, United States, Japan, Austalia, and Africa. If you have a connecting flight and some time to kill between boarding, you can't ask for a better junction than the Hawaii Islands for a small day vacation during your trip.
